Gartner stats show disk sales increase

Sales of external controller-based disk hardware is on the rise with EMC Corp. dominating the market, according to a recent report from the Gartner Group Inc.

In a study dubbed Market Share: Disk Array Storage, All Regions, All Countries, 1Q05-3Q07, the Stamford, Conn.-based research firm reported revenues from ECB disk systems were US$3,9 billion during the third quarter of 2007, up 3.4 per cent from the same period in 2006.

The study tallied revenues from hardware – including hardware revenue associated with financial leases and managed services. It did not include optional storage software or storage area network infrastructure components.

The leading vendor was Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC, with 25.8 per cent market share. The second and third-place vendors were Palo Alto, Calif.-based Hewlett Packard Co. and Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM Corp, with 14.6 and 12.6 per cent market share respectively. The fourth and fifth place vendors were Hitachi Data Systems of Santa Clara, Calif. and Round Rock, Tex.-based Dell Computer Corp., with 9.7 and 8.7 per cent share respectively.
