Building on features introduced in its Opera Internet browser version 7.0 for Windows released earlier this year, Opera Software ASA has announced an updated 7.10 Windows browser as well as a new 7.10 beta version for Linux.

The Linux 7.10 beta represents the first version update of the browser for open source users since the company released its updated 6.12 Linux browser last October. One of the latest tools introduced into both the Windows and Linux platform versions of 7.10 are the FastForward and Rewind functions. Another feature included in 7.10 is the new slideshow option, which Opera claims to be the first offered in an Internet browser. This allows users to view photo files on the Web as a slideshow presentation. Other tools in 7.10 include a notes application, which can be used in conjunction with Web pages, as well as a cookie manager. Open source users will gain access to new features, and the company says the 7.10 version of Opera will now give Linux users access to Opera’s M2 e-mail client, previously only available in the Windows 7.0 browser version. The client supports POP3, IMAP and ESMTP and has an integrated spam filter.

Vendors upgrade instant messaging

Several new enterprise instant messaging (IM) products have debuted recently, promising business-critical features, such as higher security, built-in antivirus protection and improved spam control.

Vendors GTV, IMlogic Inc. and SurfControl PLC say the products will give new capabilities to businesses that want to incorporate secure, managed IM services for their workers. New York-based GTV has launched Sonork Enterprise IM, which allows tight integration with database-driven Web applications. Waltham, Mass.-based IMlogic Monday unveiled IM Manager 5.0, which adds security, content filtering and antispam protection to existing control, reporting, archiving and compliance capabilities. Version 5.0’s new features include out-of-the-box virus-scanning capabilities, policy enforcement with archiving and logging, selective file-transfer controls to reduce the risk of virus propagation, and content filtering using keyword-blocking and notifications. The application uses an open and extensible architecture that allows it to integrate with other security products, IMlogic said. London-based SurfControl has announced an enterprise-targeted IM filter product to help IT managers control IM and peer-to-peer technology use inside their companies. The product will be available this month as a separate application that customers can layer with other SurfControl filtering products.
