12 features we would like to see in Windows 8

Windows 8.1 is a features-packed revamp of Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 8 operating systems which was released less than a year ago.

The upgrade and new apps polish the user interface of the touch-enhanced OS but there are still a number of features that Microsoft could have added to the Windows 8.1 release, according to an article on the online technology publication PCWorld.com.

For instance, Microsoft could have dropped more user interface hints about features that lurk beneath the surface of the OS. The inclusion of the new Start screen addresses some of the interface issues users had with Windows 8, but there are still many vital systems functions that remain hidden under “elusive screens,” according to the article.

Microsoft should also allow users to access Internet Explorer 11 even if they are using a non-IE browser such as Firefox or Chrome as their default browser. This was a problem with Windows 8 that has not been addressed in 8.1.

The Windows 8.1 Preview version ships with an optional $10 Media Centre pack that has a DVD playback feature. Will the release version of Windows 8.1 come with DVD playback capability? It would be a nice to have feature. It would even be nicer if users don’t need to pay extra for it.
