Why chief information officers won’t disappear

Hard on the heels of a column we came across on the state of CIOs’ reputations comes another take on the job.

Author Thornton May – who says the title dates back to 1981 – argues that with a new era in computing about the hit organizations, the importance of chief information officers is about to increase.

With the so-called Internet of Things threatening to put an IP transmitter on almost everything except a stick of gum, IT’s role in businesses and governments is only going to become more involved and more complex.

“The path ahead is exciting and requires leadership,” he writes, that can only come from a CIO.

And not, he adds, from a so-called chief digital officer.
