Japanese technology company Olympus said on Tuesday it was investigating a cyberattack on its IT systems in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.
The cybersecurity incident was discovered by the company on Sunday, but despite the help of forensic experts, the issue is still unresolved.
The latest incident follows another cyberattack that hit Olympus on September 11.
The ransomware incident, which is believed to have been committed by the BlackMatter ransomware group, affected the company’s EMEA IT systems.
Olympus described the incident as an “attempted malware attack,” but quickly explained that no data was retrieved during the incident.
The BlackMatter ransomware group is one of the most productive ransomware groups that operate today after it emerged this summer from the remnants of the DarkSide ransomware group.
Neil Jones, a cybersecurity evangelist at Egnyte, said the second cyberattack on a tech giant like Olympus in just over a month should be an important wake-up call that no major global corporation should think it is less vulnerable to ransomware attacks.
Olympus employs more than 31,000 people worldwide.
