Former CIO hired for consulting services at cloud storage provider

Sometimes it seems someone up there gives and takes away at the same time.

Mobility, for example, allows an organization’s staff to work anywhere, anytime. It also lets them upload data to cloud storage services where anyone anywhere can access it.

That’s led a number of providers to offer secure cloud services tailored for enterprises, like Dropbox For Business and Egnyte.

The simply named Box has versions for businesses and enterprises that promise robust mobile security. But how to convince buyers?

Hire chief information officers to be the persuaders going after select verticals. According to an article in IT World U.S., that’s what the provider is doing now.

Manjit Singh, former CIO at Chiquita Brands and the Las Vegas Sands Corp., is the first of several IT executives Box will hire for its consulting service. Singh will head the retail, consumer packaged goods and hospitality segments.

It’s a shrewd move because a CIO or IT manager is likely to see a colleague as someone who will understand their needs and expectations for a product.

So, like athletes who move into broadcasting, CIOs may see a future on the other side of the fence.
