Components that will boost smart phone performance

Smart phone makers still have to release the successors to last year’s hottest handsets, such as the iPhone 5s, Galaxy S4 and HTC One. However, while the details of their actual specs are not yet known, soon to be released mobile device components may provide some idea of what is to be expected from these new handsets.

New memory modules, display screens and processors will improve the performance of smart phones slated for release this year, according to Computerworld.com.

Watch out for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor. This successor to the Snapdragon 800 installed in products such devices as Sony’s Xperia Z1, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, and Google’s Nexus 5, is based on the Krait 450 quad-core CPU which runs a at speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core.

Qualcomm said the 805 also features the new Adreno 420 GPU which has up to 40 per cent more graphics processing power than the previous model, making it ideal for viewing 4K video content on mobile devices.

Expected to be released in the second half of 2014, it’s predicted to make an appearance on Samsung’s S6, the Sony Xperia Z2 and Nokia’s Lumia 1820.

Nvidia Corp.’s upcoming Tegra K1 processor puts the focus on a better gaming experience. The architecture can outperform the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, according to the company.

Nvidia is coming out with two versions of the Tegra K1. First there is the 32-bit version based on ARM’s Cortex A15 CPU. This version is meant for low performance tasks that allow it to extend battery life. The 64-bit dual super core version runs at up to 2.5 GHz. It is based on the ARMv8 architecture.

Other components to coming down the pipe includes: Samsung’s 8GB low power, double data rate (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM; a 2560 x1 440 pixel 5.5 inch display from LG; and a new nine-axis movement and position sensor from STMicroelectronics.
