The news today that Oracle will launch R2 of its flagship database in September got me thinking about the market in general and in particular about IBM’s DB2, which quietly continues to remain a competitive player.
Larry Ellison would admit that if it were not IBM, and the plans for what one day became DB2, there wouldn’t be an Oracle. A while back I had an opportunity to talk with one of the Canadians who was closely involved in the product’s development. More recently, ComputerWorld Canada’s Kathleen Lau put together had an interview with Tim Vincent, another database specialist with the IBM Toronto Software Lab. I think this is a great clip and one well worth revisiting, especially as Oracle plans its next release. Hopefully by this time next year we’ll be talking less about DB2’s past and more about its future.
