A last look at CES 2014: Mobile apps winners and show highlights

It was an amazing week at CES with over 150,000 delegates, 5,000 press, 3,200 plus exhibitors spread over more than 2 million square feet. One standout was the Mobile Apps Showdown and particularly the two student App-reneur Award winners, Tanay Tandon a 16-year old high school student and graduate student Sherwood Yao.

Robin Raskin, founder of Living in Digital Times and creator of the event commented, “CES brings together the most innovate products and brightest minds, the two ingredients for a healthy economy.  For me, it’s especially rewarding when we can show our youngest innovators that the entrepreneurial spirit that pervades CES can be theirs as well. The App-reneur scholarship shows that good ideas can come from anyone , at any age and that they will be nurtured and celebrated.”

Elim Kay, president Kay Family Foundation, who provided the scholarships noted, “Kay Family Foundation is pleased to partner with Living in Digital Times to award entrepreneurial and highly-innovative students, providing them an opportunity to showcase their work to a global audience. It is important that such young leaders be recognized and supported for their tenacity and hard work as they strive to change the world.” Elim talks further about the foundation and the award in this video.

I asked Tanay about his technology and the value it provides. “Clipped is an NLP-based technology that uses grammatical pattern classification to automatically generate a summary and visual info-graphic of a news article. The program is built using Python on the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) and sci-kit learn frameworks, and makes use of Random Forest methodology to identify subject-predicate structures in sentences. The algorithm is useful when viewing content on mobile devices, and presents a quicker way to get the gist of long content. In a fast-paced world, summarization models are becoming increasingly viable formats of reading and understanding content and Clipped addresses that problem.”

About Tanay’s future goals, he replied, “Over the next couple of months in 2014 I plan on spreading the technology through an NLP API so other developers can integrate Clipped technology into their applications. Furthermore, I hope to work on a version of the app for Google Glass using OCR technology. On a slightly more long-term frame, over the next year and those following it, I want to develop Clipped into a product for consumer and enterprise grade NLP analysis, providing a single framework through which sentiment analysis, summarization, topic-segmentation and a variety of Natural Language tasks can be executed.”

Tanay went on to describe his life journey milestones and what drives his passion. “I’m extremely passionate about AI and Machine Learning as a field overall. One of my goals is to enter the research field to build algorithms that can think like humans, and help solve some of the biggest challenges regarding energy consumption, resource-management, and deep-space exploration. Overall, my goal is to combine entrepreneurship with research to bring intelligent, and cutting-edge products to the mainstream world.”

Sherwood Yao is the lead for the tapsBook team having completed undergraduate studies in China and graduate degrees in the U.S. (one still in the works). As noted in an interview with Robin Raskin, TapsBook is the first 2-in-1 mobile app with intuitive UI design, new patent pending swiping gesture photo rating systems allowing the organizing and distributing of photos, organizing of photos into folders, creation of  photo books, managing the distribution of the books across social networks and print.
