Would you hire a hacker?

Maybe you thought the fad of hiring hackers had died. Not according to Ira Winkler, chief security strategist at Hewlett-Packard Co., who reports that there are professionals within the Fortune 500 who still think it’s all right to hire hackers.

“Somehow they think it makes their company ‘bleeding edge’ to have criminals looking for vulnerabilities on their network,” says Winkler. “Computer criminals haven’t proven any skills except the willingness to commit a crime. If you hire them, you’re exposing your company to unnecessary risks. You can find legitimate people to do this work.”
