Wireless and mobile technologies are set to occupy the agenda at TechXNY in New York this week, as companies such as Toshiba Corp., Ascendent Telecommunications Inc., and Synchrologic Inc. unveil new offerings.
Targeting office workers who require on-campus mobility, Toshiba will announce ultralight, ultrathin wireless notebooks based on the company’s Portege 2000 series, nicknamed “corridor cruisers.”
Expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2002, corridor cruisers will utilize wireless 802.11 and Bluetooth technologies, according to Toshiba.
Next-generation mobile devices from vendors such as Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft are also expected to be featured at the show. Jeff Raikes, group vice president for productivity and business services at Microsoft, will demonstrate new applications for Tablet PC devices during his Tuesday keynote address.
Voice telecommunications are also set to be highlighted by Toshiba and partner Ascendent Telecommunications in a deal whereby voice communications management will be embedded in Toshiba notebooks and PDAs.
The MobilityConnect product will allow companies to incorporate into their PBX systems the variety of mobile devices being used by employees. Another product, Wireless Connect, will give users a wireless entry point into PBX systems.
Wireless infrastructure supplier Synchrologic will target corporate e-mail with its announcement of Email Accelerator. The server-based application can be deployed over current and future cellular networks, including GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), to push corporate e-mail to cell phones and converged voice and data devices.
