VMware releases virtual machine manager

VMware Inc. has announced the general availability of its lifecycle management tool that aims to give IT administrators more control of their virtual infrastructure and fight against virtual sprawl.

In addition to giving users the ability to automate the virtual machine (VM) provisioning, VMware Lifecycle Manager also allows IT staff to track who owns each VM, when it was requested, who approved it, where it was deployed and for how long it has been in operation. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company said that as enterprises continues to move toward virtualized infrastructures they will need to protect themselves against the management problems that come with it – such as virtual sprawl.

For ease-of-use, VMware Lifecycle Manager gives users the opportunity to select from a pre-defined menu of virtual machines with different properties including processor and memory capabilities. VMware also said the tool’s Web-based interface will be particularly attractive to IT managers looking to keep tabs on their virtual environment.
