U.S. feds tracking Internet attacks

The FBI’s National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) is monitoring a series of low-intensity cyberattacks launched today against U.S. Internet service providers.

The NIPC issued a warning late yesterday after receiving what it called “credible, but non-specific information” from officials in Europe “that wide-scale hacker attacks against U.S. Web sites and Internet service providers (ISP) are being planned for later tonight, possibly emanating from Western Europe.”

Although a significant upswing in traffic was detected early this morning, there have been no reported incidents of service outages. However, the NIPC warning recommended that Web site and ISP administrators “heighten their awareness of network traffic” for the remainder of the day today and to report any suspicious network activity.
