India’s Tata Group has merged five of its backbone communications properties, including its Teleglobe brand, under a new banner called Tata Communications. The new unit integrates Teleglobe, VSNL, Tata Indicom Enterprise Business Unit, and CIPRIS divisions into what it calls the Tata Global Network (TGN), a which it says gives the company the ability to deliver IP-leveraged communications solutions to businesses and consumers worldwide.
“Tata Communications reflects the 130-year strong heritage of trust and leadership that the Tata Group brings to its customers,” Subodh Bhargava, chairman of Tata Communications, said in a news release issued Wednesday. “The new identity is a major step in our commitment in building long-lasting relationships with our customers, partners and stakeholders.”
Tata Group is a U.S. $29 billion conglomerate with divisions making everything from tea to cars. It bought Montreal-based Teleglobe in 2005 from two U.S. private capital companies, who had bought the struggling company in 2002.
Through its now united divisions, its terrestrial, wireless and underwater cable links stretch around the world, with offices in 40 countries selling communications services. It offers connectivity to more than 200 countries across 300 points of presence. Tata Communications will be headed by CEO and managing director N. Srinath.
In the news release the company said it will leverage its network to meet the demand for converged IP solutions. It is in the process of completing additional submarine cable systems connecting emerging markets in Asia, the Middle East and Africa to Europe, planning to invest more than U.S. $2 billion over the next three years to further fuel its global expansion plans.
The release said Tata Communications is also expanding its global MPLS and Ethernet networks to enable scalable and secure connectivity and advanced services.
The Tata Communications portfolio includes transmission, IP, converged voice, mobility, managed network connectivity, hosted data center, communications solutions and business transformation services to global enterprises and service providers.
