In a move they said will give customers more technology choices, Sun Microsystems Inc. and content management vendor Vignette Corp. have unveiled a plan to bolster the integration between their product lines.
In an announcement Wednesday, Vignette said it will integrate Sun’s Java System Directory Server into its Vignette V7 content management suites. Vignette will also add support for Sun’s Java Enterprise System software components, such as the Sun Java System Application Server. The company plans to later add a portlet library to connect Vignette V7 to Sun’s Java System Portal Server.
Jim Hahn, a spokesman for Austin-based Vignette, said the deal broadens an existing partner relationship the two companies have had since August 2000.
For customers of both companies, the deal will make it easier to deploy Sun and Vignette applications together with fewer configuration and installation problems, while reducing the time it takes to get them up and running, Hahn said.
Michael Bohlig, director of global independent software vendors at Sun, said Vignette’s use of Sun technologies will also cut costs and research and development time for Vignette, while incorporating existing technologies. “What we want to do is provide a joint solution at the least cost and with the fastest time to production as possible,” Bohlig said.
Vignette’s support for Sun’s Java Enterprise Application Server is available now, Bohlig said. The addition of the portlet libraries and portal integration is expected next month. Vignette will integrate Sun’s Java System Directory Server into its next release of Vignette V7, he said.
The vertical markets most directly affected by the move are federal and state governments and employee portals, according to Sun.
