Think a Samsung Galaxy S4 and its 5-in. screen is too big for your pocket? A number of Canadian carriers now have a smaller version.
The Galaxy S4 mini, which has a 4.3-in. screen, went on sale Friday at Bell Mobility and Rogers Communications stores. In addition to its smaller size, it also has smaller specs. The handset has a dual core 1.7 GHz processor (the S4 has a 1.9 GHz quad core CPU), an 8MP camera (compared to 13 MP) and starts with 8 GB of memory (compared to 16 MB). Both run on LTE/HSPA networks. Screen resolution is 540 x 960 pixels (compared to 1920 x 1080).
It comes in black or white.
On pricing, Rogers and Bell are offering the S4 mini at $149.99 on two year plans or $449.99 on month-to-month.
The handset was one of a number of mobile products Samsung announced two weeks ago including the SIII mini, the pen-enabled Galaxy Note 3 and the larger Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition) and the Galaxy Gear watch.
For those who do need a smart phone with a big screen, the Note 3 is the third vision of the almost tablet-sized unit, which now has a 5.7 in. screen in a slimmer and lighter frame than the Note 2, as well as longer lasting battery.
It is powered by a 2.3 Ghz quad core processor running Android 4.3, and has a minimum of 32 GB of memory. Rogers has the Note 3 at $249.99 on two year plans, or $699.99 full price. Bell has the Note 3 for $299.95 on a two year plan. Wind charges $449 on a $40 plan or $749 full price.
