Oracle gains signaling software in Tekelec deal

Oracle Corp. is bolstering it communications offering with the acquisition of Tekelec Inc. a telecommunications equipment provider.

The purchase of the Calif.-based firm closely follows Oracle’s acquisition in February of communications specialist Acme Packet for $2.1 billion.

Tekelec’s network signaling, policy control and subscriber data management technologies can be folded into Oracle’s suite of telecommunication-focused products. The Tekelex deal is expected to give Oracle a gateway to large service providers such as Orange, T-Mobile, At&T and Verizon.

The core of Tekelec’s offering is around its new diameter network suite. These products enable telcos to build and scale LTE, IMS and 3G networks and launch personalized services to subscribers and help them work with cloud and machine-to-machine providers.

With Acme and Tekelec, the database company is aiming to profit for the exploding mobile device market and increasing network management demands brought about by the bring your own device trend.

“What we’d like to become is one of the most strategic suppliers to telcos overall, which involves broadening our footprint of what we supply them,” said Larry Ellison, CEO for Oracle in statement today.
