Opinion: The real reason for Microsoft’s woes

Microsoft Corp. isn’t what it once was. It’s still a fabulously rich — despite registering its first operating loss — and somewhat powerful company, but it isn’t the centre of the IT universe any more. That spot has been taken by Google and Apple. Which has led to a number of news organizations to take another look at Microsoft’s past and future.

What we have here is an evaluation of one work — dismissed as “an eloquent hatchet job of Steve Ballmer” — rather than an analysis of what is claimed to be the real reason Microsoft is in trouble: “Industry structure dynamics.” The author admits that duller than a theory based on personalities, but argues its closer to the truth.

You be the judge.
