Bye-bye to Windows NT on Alpha
Compaq Computer Corp., after pulling the plug on its development work for Windows NT on the Alpha platform and firing more than 100 last month, met with mixed reaction around the industry. Dwindling revenue numbers coupled with the announcement of high-powered eight-way Intel-based servers combined to bring about the demise of NT on Alpha. Compaq has assured that current implementations of NT on Alpha will be supported through Service Pack 6 of Windows NT 4.0. Microsoft has assured the public that its relationship with Compaq remains strong and it encourages people to consider the eight-way Intel-based servers as an alternative.
