MS launches OS for kiosks, thin clients

Microsoft Corp. is shipping Windows Embedded Standard 2009 Community Technology Preview (CTP), which is designed to let original equipment manufacturers connect thin clients and kiosks with existing corporate IT systems.

Windows Standard 2009 is scheduled to ship by the end of 2008 and the CTP is available for download from the Microsoft Web site.

Designed for “service-oriented devices,” the product includes Silverlight, .NET Framework 3.5 and Remote Desktop Protocol. By using Silverlight, Microsoft’s Web browser plug-in, developers can make applications that use video, animation and interactive features. With Remote Desktop Protocol, developers can connect devices to PCs using the Windows Vista operating system and use the security and management features of the Windows Server 2008 operating system.

Windows Embedded Standard 2009 also includes drivers for Intel Corp.’s processors.
