Mobile signatures do away with pens

A partnership between two companies to bring mobile signature technology to the mobile device users could help improve wireless security.

The Mobile Authentication Client (VMAC) technology from Helsinki-based provider of mobile signature solutions, Valimo Wireless, will be integrated with subscriber identity module (SIM) cards by Paris-based digital security technology vendor Gemalto.

The partnership is meant to address the mounting interest within the telecommunications community for mobile signatures. Mobile signatures are essentially the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature on a paper contract required for e-services, online banking, government documents, and corporate Intranet access from an external location, for instance.

Mobile signatures negate the need for additional passwords, devices or software, according to the companies.

VMAC functions on any GSM phone.
