MidoNet adds L2,3 gateway support for SDN

Midokura has released the latest version of its MidoNet software-defined network virtualization solution for service providers and organizations building infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings.

In addition to including Layer 2 Gateway support, advanced Layer 3 Gateway functionality and other new features, MidoNet now offers integration and full support for OpenStack Grizzly and Havana releases, the company said in a statement.

OpenStack is used for building public and private clouds.

“With our new release, Midokura solidifies its disruptive position in the market and MidoNet as the natural network virtualization platform for the OpenStack community,” company co-founder and CEO Dan Mihai Dumitriu said in a statement. “We will continue to innovate alongside current OpenStack advances, and help advance the market.”

The Layer 2 (L2) gateway integration allows network engineers to connect bare-metal servers to the overlay an existing network, the company said. For customers that need to connect virtual and physical networks, MidoNet’s software-based gateway provides the necessary integration and ultimately a migration path for the future.

As a result, the company said, organization can build an IaaS cloud with fully virtualized and distributed scale-out networking, while enabling existing physical servers to participate in the network overlay.

The new MidoNet release’s L3 gateway functionality supports dynamic routing for fault tolerance and gateway scalability.
