Central Command Inc. last month announced the release of its new antivirus software, the AntiVirus eXpert (AVX), at the Comdex show in Las Vegas. The Medina, Ohio-based company also introduced AVX Enterprise, a network management console which the company says will allow administrators to execute antivirus actions from any Web browser or Internet-enabled handheld device. According to Central Command, AVX is designed around an open, plug-in architecture that enables the software to automatically download new virus protection upgrades from the Internet, without the user having to visit the company Web site. AVX Professional, the company’s flagship desktop product, is listed for retail beginning at US$38.95. A freee 30-day trial can be downloaded from www.avx.com.

Tulsa, Okla.’s SolarWinds.Net has released its new Windows-based network management and discovery software-Professional Edition 2.1. The software comes equipped with 24 network discovery, monitoring and troubleshooting tools inluding IP Network Address Recovery, DNS Audit, and a Network Monitor that SolarWinds says can measure the availability of hundreds of nodes worldwide. Its IP Network Browser also allows engineers to create a detailed discovery of their network and then publish the results on the Web. The SolarWinds Professional Edition tool is priced at US$325. Columbus, Ohio’s MetaProducts Corporation has released the second version of its Mass Downloader, a Windows-based application designed to minimize the time it takes to download files from the Internet or FTP sites. According to MetaProducts, new features on board MD 2.0 include a category tree, more toolbar buttons for easier navigation, HTTPS protocol support, imrpoved FTP support, and improved MS Internet Explorer context menu support for easier downloads. Mass Downloader is a standalone program that supports multithreading, allowing it to download more than one program at a time, according to MetaProducts.
