Kognitio releases new range of data warehouse devices

Kognitio has launched a new range of data warehouse appliances claiming that they improve the options for fast data handling.

The WX2 appliance, uses Kognitio’s WX2 in-memory analytic database at its core. The appliance comes in four configurations, ranging from 16 servers operating in parallel up to 64, with the ability to offer 75 terabytes of storage and pin up to 16 terabytes of information in memory. Kognitio claimed that the WX2 appliance would be particularly ideal for for companies using OLAP within their data warehouses.

The appliances come in four models: 19.2TB, 38,4TB and 75B capacity with memory options ranging from 2TB of RAM to 16TB of RAM. “The starting price is US$29,000 (so £17,795 at the current exchange rate) per TB capacity, although this scales down for the higher-capacity models. So, for example, currently the WX2-16 appliance – the 19.2TB model – would cost around £345,000,” said a Kognitio spokesman.

The company said that compared to the products from Netezza, the WX2 appliances were built on industry-standard technology. Kognitio’s main differentiator from other appliances, Netezza’s in particular, is that it isn’t built on proprietary hardware. “Whilst the Kognitio appliance is now primarily built on HP hardware, it can also be built on IBM, Dell or any other white box architecture. This helps give the lower cost of entry (more on that below) as well as making upgrading or repurposing the architecture much simpler and less restrictive in the future,” said the Kognitio spokesman.

The range has met with analyst approval. “Companies seeking a dedicated solution increasingly don’t have the time, the money or the personnel traditionally required to configure and implement a full data warehouse deployment. The line of WX2 appliances also enables companies to seamlessly add additional capacity as their analytics needs grow; this is a significant benefit in terms of time, money and results,” said Shawn Rogers, vice president at Enterprise Management Associates.
