Juniper acquires content delivery technology

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Juniper Networks has acquired technology and personnel from BitGravity, the content delivery networking (CDN) subsidiary of Tata Communications.

Juniper purchased the service management layer technology of BitGravity. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed and Juniper would not say how many BitGravity engineers will join the company.

The new technology will be added into the Content and Media unit in Juniper’s Software Solutions business. Juniper plans to use the BitGravity CDN technology with its own MediaFlow content management products to enable media providers to deliver online content more efficiently and improve service.

Juniper acquired Ankeena Networks almost two years ago to obtain the MediaFlow technology and product line.

Juniper said it will announce new and existing products later this year that include the BitGravity technology.

BitGravity had already been integrating Juniper’s Media Flow technology into its CDN service management technology. This was the impetus for acquiring it after evaluating similar technology from other CDN companies, says Tom Fountain, general manager of Juniper’s Content and Media business unit.

“Its battle-hardened nature and existing integration with MediaFlow” tipped the scales in favor of BitGravity, Fountain says.
