HP workstation at PC price

Hewlett Packard Co. has launched a workstation running on AMD’s Quad-Core Opteron processor at what it’s calling a “PC price”.

The HP xw4550 Workstation includes the processor for entry workstation applications such as engineering, digital content creation and power office.

Jeff Wood, director of product marketing for workstations at HP, said “The HP xw4550 makes it easier for anyone wishing to tap the power of a workstation to afford to have one under their desk.”

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based said the new workstation offers the engineering advantages of the company’s “highly tuned” workstations. But in addition, there are new features from the AMD Opteron processor line, like power management and virtualization capabilities.

AMD’s Direct Connect Architecture also grants the system efficiency and flexibility, said HP.

All models of the HP xw4550 include an integrated ATI Radeon X1250 graphics card with the new error correcting memory capability.

And, the new workstation strives to be environmentally friendly with ninety per cent of its weight being recyclable. It also incorporates a tool-less chassis design for easy upgrades by hand, and an 80 PLUS power supply to reduce overall energy usage and waste heat released.
