HP program to manage Cisco nets

Hewlett-Packard Co. has stretched its network management arm, announcing a new program that will offer enterprise IP telephony, network infrastructure and service management to Cisco Systems Inc. networks.

The new Smart Way 2004 program, unveiled Monday at HP’s annual Software Forum in Chicago, is a joint venture between HP and Cisco, which offers three modular solutions for enhanced infrastructure performance, real-time fault management and reduced cost to Cisco enterprise network customers.

The Smart Way 2004 management solution comes with the OpenView Performance Insight Report Pack for Cisco IP Telephony Statistics, which enables network administrators to get detailed diagnostic information via CiscoWorks Gateway Utility such as impending capacity limitations, in order to re-balance network loads before capacity is reached. The solution also includes a Cisco platform-capable fault management and capacity management solution designed specifically for IP telephony networks.

The program also offers enhanced network management capabilities by integrating CiscoWorks with HP’s OpenView Network Node Managed 7.0 Advanced, which offers advanced management of switches and virtual local area networks (VLANs), in addition to conducting root-cause analysis and distributed management of large networks. The integrated offering includes expanded Cisco device coverage and intelligence like categorization of Cisco alarms, HP said.

Last on the list, the Smart Way 2004 program addresses service management issues in order to solve infrastructure issues before they affect enterprise service delivery. The offering utilizes HP OpenView Smart Service Management for Cisco environments to give corporate customers graphic, service level views of diagnostic information, allowing them to tie network errors to business impact.

According to HP, Smart Way 2004 is the newest offering in its Adaptive Enterprise strategy. The plan allows enterprises to adapt their IT infrastructures to changing markets and customer demands.

Smart Way 2004 is available now worldwide. For more information, visit the company’s Canadian Web site at www.hp.ca. Cisco is online at www.cisco.com.
