HP, BEA hint at joint application server project

BEA Systems Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. are poised to make an announcement on Monday that will have a “significant impact” on the application server software market, according to an advisory issued by BEA’s public relations firm.

BEA’s public relations company issued an advisory on Thursday that said the two companies will band together to compete against IBM Corp.

Patrick O’Rourke, a San Jose-based spokesperson for BEA, said the advisory was sent out to some members of the media as a “heads-up” for the announcement on Monday.

Both companies already compete individually with IBM – BEA in the software market and HP in servers, desktop computers and other products.

The deal is expected to reveal how the new HP will deliver software to its customers moving forward.

HP previously offered its own application server, but in July it announced plans to sell many of its middleware products in favour of partnership agreements with other vendors. The company said it would provide more information in mid-September of how it planned to move its customers from its own products onto those of its partners.
