How secure is Skype?

Do encrypted Skype calls have the ability to be tapped?
That question was raised earlier this year when Microsoft Corp. applied for a patent apparently allowing “silent recording communications.” As this article states, Microsoft [Nasdaq: MSFT] is vague, saying it co-operates with law enforcement agencies.

The fact is no IT company would want to sell a product that would defy the ability of police to lawfully intercept communications.

That still leaves the quesiton of whether Skype — used by millions around the world for business as well as personal calls — can be cracked by the rest of us. So the Electronic Frontier Foundation recommends avoiding Skype if you want to have a secure — and, it goes without saying, legal — talk with someone.
