Four people arrested in data theft scheme

Supermarket Stop & Shop said that Rhode Island police arrested four men last month in connection with the recent theft of credit and debit card systems at checkout lines.

The arrests of the men, who are from California, took place at the Coventry, R.I., Stop & Shop. The men allegedly were part of a scheme to switch out the checkout lane PIN pads that customers use to swipe their credit and debt cards through. Stop & Shop issued a news release on Feb. 17 to say that it had been hit by identity thieves.

The retailer said it was working with local and federal law enforcement to investigate tampering with checkout lane PIN pads.

Stop & Shop said at the time that account and PIN numbers for customers’ cards used in two Rhode Island stores had been stolen. Evidence of tampering, though not theft, had also been detected at two other Rhode
