Forget 4G, Samsung claims 5G breakthrough

Samsung Electronics today said it has achieved a breakthrough that will enable it to provide mobile data transmission speeds of up to several hundred times faster than the current 4G technology.

Samsung’s fifth generation mobile broadband technology will be available for business and consumer users by 2020, according to the South Korean firm which is currently the world’s biggest phone maker.

“Samsung’s latest innovation is expected to invigorate research into 5G cellular communications across the world,” according to statement for Samsung. “The company believes it will trigger the creation of international alliances and the timely commercialization of related mobile broadband services.”

It has long been considered that millimeter-wave bands were unsuitable for transmitting data over long distances because of its unfavourable propagation characteristics, Samsung said. However, the company claims its new adaptive array transceiver technology can transmit data in the millimeter-wave band at a frequency of 28 GHz at a speed of up to 1.056 Gbps (gibabit per second) to a distance of up to two kilometers.

Samsung 5G will be capable of delivering a “ubiquitous Gbps  experience to subscribers anywhere and offer data transmission speeds of up to several tens of Gbps per base station.”

However, Samsung said, high-speed 5G implementations will need “a broader band of frequencies, much like an increased water flow requires a wider pipe.”
