Voice over Internet Protocol solutions company CounterPath Corp. has released a softphone software development kit (SDK) that helps operators, solutions vendors and enterprise firms hasten the rollout of SIP-based softphone apps for iOS and Android mobile platforms as well as Windows and Mac computer environments.
The company said its new SDK provides more options that integrate with telco standards than the new WebRTC application programming interface (API).
The SDK replaces CounterPath’s legacy SDK including the C++ SDK for Windows and Mac and COM and the ActiveX SDK for Windows.
In-house mobile app programming is often hampered by integration issues such as the need to deal with session initiation protocol (SIP) signaling and session description protocol (SDP) negotiation.
The SDK developed by Vancouver-based CounterPath enables programmers to integrate desktop, tablet and mobile softphone functionality into their applications without the need to directly handle SIP signaling, SDP negotiation, media engine/codecs, security and device management.
The SDK also includes sample application codes that programmers can use to speed up development time.
“The new SDK gives users more go-to market options for a complete solution that integrates with proven and accepted telco standards, products and networks where other SDKs and technologies such as WebRTC fall short,” said Todd Carothers, executive vice-president of marketing and products at CounterPath.
WebRTC is a Javascript API that allows multimedia communication through browsers. It has no client to download and configure and no plug-ins. Users can simply click a button and launch a video conference,
The CounterPath SDK supports Windows, Mac OSX, IOS and Android environments natively. It is network agnostic and has passed interoperability tests with vendors and providers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, Broadsoft, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Mitel and Panasonic.
