Looking to extend Java support across the application lifecycle, Compuware Corp. has injected new functionality into its Java development wares.
Updates to Compuware include new versions of OptimalJ, for model-driven development; Vantage Analyzer for J2EE, for performance management; and DevPartner Java Edition 3.3, for productivity and profiling.
Key to the new iteration of OptimalJ, Version 3.3, is the ability to automatically generate user interfaces for applications developed using OptimalJ. “The product, in the past, automated the development of the structural parts of an application, and now we have extended that to provide complete automation of the UI,” said John Williams, director of strategic initiatives at Compuware.
OptimalJ, Version 3.3, also features improved links to legacy application environments, through integration with Sabratec Ltd. ApplinX and Information Builders Inc. iWay JCA adapter technology for SAP R/3. To boost collaboration with business analysts who define business-level requirements, OptimalJ 3.3 also integrates with SteelTrace Catalyze.
“Java is evolving so fast that companies can’t necessarily hire brilliant experts in every category all the time,” said Williams. “No longer can we afford to silo the disciplines and deliver tools as though they existed in a vacuum.”
For example, Vantage Analyzer is designed to boost visibility into J2EE application servers and identify bottlenecks from the applications through to the back-end infrastructure, Williams said. IT workers can use Vantage dashboards to measure end-user response times and give information about performance slowdowns to developers, he added.
Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. in West Des Moines, Iowa, has tested a beta version of Vantage Analyzer to correlate end-user performance in a Java-based property and casualty application to problems on its mainframe, said Matt Evanson, the company’s team leader of enterprise monitoring solutions. “We wanted to dig deeper into WebSphere and the Java itself. Analyzer will help us understand…what calls are causing the slowdown.”
The updated DevPartner Java Edition 3.3 includes memory analysis as well as performance profiling.
