Cloud book author issues a caution

Cloud computing offers many advantages, including lower corporate infrastructure costs, flexibility and the possibility of improved security.

But not all clouds are the same: There are public clouds, private clouds, hybrid clouds and a variety of cloud providers different groups in your organization demand on having – an ERP cloud provider may not have the CRM tools your sales staff needs, for example.

Yet vendors do their darndest to assure organizations they have all the tools you need in their solution.

In a new book, Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & Architecture, co-author Thomas Erl cautions against that. The book takes an exhaustive look at proven and mature cloud computing technologies and practices and puts them into a series of well-defined concepts and models.

Writer Joe McKendrick interviewed him recently, where he warned that vendor lock-in is something organizations have to watch out for.

Thomas has led the development of curricula for the Cloud Certified Professional (CCP) and SOA Certified Professional (SOACP) accreditation programs.
