Vancouver-based Sierra Wireless last month signed an agreement with TELUS Mobility to develop a next-generation CDMA Type II PC card that will wirelessly enable laptops and handheld devices at speeds of up to 144Kbps. The companies say this speed is a ten-fold increase over CDMA PC cards available now. CDMA (code division multiple access) spreads information in a particular signal over a greater bandwidth than the original signal. TELUS said an increase in the data rate will increase the value of wireless connectivity to corporations. According to Sierra Wireless, the agreement accelerates its ability to develop wireless solutions for next-generation networks. Kyberpass Corp. recently announced the Kyberpass K2 for the Palm OS that will enable Palm OS applications to operate securely over standard TCP/IP networks using public key infrastructure (PKI) technology. The Ottawa-based company said the K2 PKI-enables a small footprint middleware software client that will operate over any Palm-supported TCP/IP interface including a PTSN modem and infrared, allowing Palm users to connect to any ISP globally using standard Internet protocols, without having to use specialized networks or wireless application protocol (WAP). Toronto-based Enterasys Networks has announced its support for the emerging IEEE 802.1X authentication industry standard. The company said 802.1X will be supported in Enterasys’ Matrix switching line and NetSight network management products. Network-based authentication, when standardized via IEEE 802.1X, will be an enhancement when securing LANs, according to the Gartner Group. Enterasys plans to deliver a firmware upgrade supporting 802.1X in its Matrix E7, E6, E5 and NetSight Element Manager, Switch Manager and Topology Manager lines this year.
