Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Avaya Inc. has unveiled a unified messaging solution that allows mobile workers to use spoken commands to access e-mail, calendars and meeting requests. Using simple voice commands, users can ask the system to list, read aloud, reply to, forward and initiate messages, retrieve Microsoft Outlook contact information or set up a multiple-part conference call. Accessed through a human-sounding virtual assistant, the software is an add-on to Avaya’s Unified Messenger, which already provides single-mailbox access for e-mail, voice mail and fax messages from PCs, touchtone phones, handheld or the Internet, regardless of how the messages were originally sent. Shared Technologies of Canada (STOC) has acquired the infrastructure and clients of the downtown Toronto properties serviced by Everest Broadband Networks Canada. Under the deal, STOC – a Toronto-based building local exchange carrier – will take over the servicing of all clients and infrastructure of the buildings at 18 King St. E., 67 Yonge St. and 25 Adelaide St. E. STOC will handle the fibre, data-switching equipment and telecom license agreements for all three buildings. Through its shared tenant model, STOC already provides voice, data and IT support to some 500 customers with 10,000 end users in 70 buildings, including First Canadian Place, BCE Place and The Eaton Centre complex.
