Fujitsu Technology Solutions Inc.

released a new server last month, continuing its efforts to build up its North American presence in the hardware market. The new offering is a part of the company’s PrimePower line of servers, compatible with the Solaris operating system and running on Sun SPARC-compatible processors. According to a release issued by Fujitsu, the PrimePower 1 is one unit (or 1.75-inch) high and is designed for rack-mount arrangements. PrimePower runs on a 500MHz UltraSPARC IIe processor, and supports a maximum of 2GB of memory and 72.8GB of disk capacity. Novell Inc.

recently announced the launch of its next-generation of Novell Modular Authenticaiton Services (NMAS), its enterprise security software. According to the company, NMAS 2.0 enables organizations to protect access to network resources, and simplifies network administration. NMAS leverages the company’s NDS eDirectory, and enables customers to set access policies to certain areas of a network – so a company could combine passwords with fingerprints and tokens for access. The new version of NMAS, which will be available on May 31, runs on both NetWare and Windows platforms. Pricing will be approximately $72 per user. Novell is on the Web at www.novell.com.

Hewlett-Packard Co.

last month released 21 new server appliance products designed to handle specialized Internet content management functions. HP unveiled server appliance products able to handle dedicated tasks from Web hosting and Web caching to virtual private networks, traffic management and streaming media caching. Among the new offerings: two models of a Web hosting appliance, which features a browser interface, available immediately starting at US$2,199; two models each of both its Web Cache and Media Cache server appliance lines, which start at US$16,999 and will be available on June 1. The company also launched nine new Traffic Management appliances which will start at US$6,999 and are now available, and four new VPN appliances are aimed at helping users route information though secure tunnels on the Internet. Available this month, the units will start at US$3,499.
