A Commonwealth Government funded research center, worth A$14 million (US$8.4 million), that will focus on technologies, applications and services has opened in Sydney.
The Centre for Networking Technologies for the Information Economy (CeNTIE) is being developed in the areas of telehealth, media systems, telecollaboration and information brokering.
CeNTIE has pioneered technologies such as the Virtual Critical Care Unit currently being trialed in New South Wales hospitals.
CeNTIE was established by the CSIRO, in collaboration with IP1 Australia, Nortel Networks Corp., the University of New South Wales, the University of Technology, Sydney, and the Western Australian Interactive Virtual Environments Centre.
