As wireless service becomes less expensive and more people are using second phone lines for DSL connections, ABI Research predicts five million users will connect their security alarms over cellular lines.
In a report released this week, the Oyster Bay, N.Y. firm said last year, there were fewer than 2.5 million wireless security alarm connections, but this number will jump to 7.5 million by 2013.
ABI’s senior research analyst, Sam Lucero, said in a written statement that cellular connections cannot be cut and current cellular module technology includes anti-jamming features. He also noted many security alarm dealers require training on how to install the technology, and the high cost of CDMA modules is one inhibitor to adoption.
But he noted many wireless companies are now offering security services, using wireless either as a primary or backup connection.
