Is gaming redefining business, careers, education and the future? Hashtag Trending, the Weekend Edition

Hashtag Trending Podcast

Welcome to Hashtag Trending – the weekend Edition, where we bring you an in-depth interview with an expert on topics relevant to today’s news.

Our guest today is Lucy Chow a future-focused thought leader and author of Changing the Game: Discover how Esports and Gaming are Redefining Business, Careers, Education and The Future. The book was published in October of this year.

I have a particular interest in this area, or at least personal experience. I’m not a gamer – the last serious electronic game I played was pong in, I think, the 1970’s. I’ve tried them and I just don’t get it. Which makes me what seems to part of a very small minority – if not in the world, then at least in my household.

My two kids were obsessed with video games. There was constant discussion about first person shooters and a raft of other constructs. And the constant sound of “ping, ping, ping.”

Like any good parent, I advised them to try to drop the games and pay attention to their studies, get into a good university. That advice fell on deaf ears.

My daughter dropped out in her last year.

Today, she is at least a minor celebrity as a game writer. She writes role playing games. Her first game when she was still a teen ager got 50,000 downloads in a single week. She’s still a major force in the gaming world.

And I’ve said this in live settings a number of times, but here it is recorded for all to hear – I’ll say those three words than men find so difficult to say — I was wrong.

But, in my defence, gaming as work is a bit like the NHL for kids who play hockey. It can be very profitable for some – but few make it to the top, and many grind it out for little money even in their adult years, hoping for that big break.

And yet, there’s a huge industry out there where there are jobs. Gamification, remote work, virtual worlds – the world of gaming is an economic force and perhaps the way in which a lot our kids will work.

For parents like me, even those who have spent their lives in the technology industry, it’s confusing and sometimes difficult to understand.

So when my guest Lucy Chow’s publicist pitched me on having her on our show I jumped at the chance. As I said earlier, she’s the author of Changing the Game: Discover how Esports and Gaming are Redefining Business, Careers, Education and The Future,
