Why Blackberry Needs To Up Their Game To Compete

Why Blackberry needs to up their game to compete – Bold 9780 review

I used to think that Blackberry was the defacto standard for smartphones but now that I have a BB 9780 I’m not so sure.  While users  have several profiles for different email addresses to manage, check, edit the BB rocks.  Their email security is nearly legendary so props to RIM for that.  The BB9780 also has good battery life as well and very easy to send email.

The specs for the carrier in Toronto are: Frequencies/Bands: GSM/GPRS/EDGE : 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz HSPA AWS 1700 MHz, 900 MHz and 2100 MHz.  This limits the usage of BB products to exclude the Torch 9800.  Previously, I had used an Android phone. although it was simple phone with an early version of Android it was still simple to use and offered a very user friendly interface.

It seems with the BB 9780 many simple tasks that were taken for granted using the Android product are not as easy to use now seem to take two or three steps to do the same thing.  Also the desktop manager seems to somehow now have a problem syncing and backing up the device it just stalls although all recent updates have been applied.  No configuration changes were made to the device to disable the operation of synching and backup.  Backups have not happened for close to week as it seems to  stick at different points of the backup. Recently, within the last week it has somehow rectified itself though to be able to backup at least but not sync.

The Android smartphone options from either HTC, Samsung or Motorola offer better user friendly features and are easier to use. BB needs to simplify their interface and find easier ways to do things.  The process and administration of using the BB seems needlessly difficult. When comparing the Android device to the iPhone it seemed compatible for feature/functions and even exceeded some iOS in certain aspects.  The ease of use, practical apps are more widely available for iOS and Android, yet another aspect that BB may have to reach out to developers and build a strong partner ecosystem.

All in all, I see many deficiencies in the BB 9780 for simple tasks and miss the Android device. With all of the new features offered by the Android phones I long for that level of functionality on the 9780 although the phone is a month old – very disappointing.  With iPhone and Android being such a user friendly platform the BB 9780 has a lot of catching upto do in even with simple tasks.
