What ITAC has to say about the election

The Information Technology Association of Canada sent out a letter to Harper, Dion, and Layton (what, no Duceppe or May? burn!) about its wishlist for the IT industry in the wake of Tuesday’s election results.

It’s a little wordy (see: “Our industry is a lead player in the knowledge economy and because of its unique role as an enabler is especially placed to appreciate the degree to which our future prosperity across all sectors is dependent upon a strategy for success in the knowledge economy”), but here are some highlights.

***We need to bolster our domestically grown talent pool by attracting the best and brightest from all around the world to come to Canada to make their scientific discoveries, complete their educations or build their businesses.

***Fiscal policy makers must maintain a disciplined approach to the reduction of the overall tax burden without eroding our social support system or hampering our agility to respond to the inducements offered by our competitors for highly prized investments in knowledge-based enterprises.

***Increasingly the drive to higher productivity and competitiveness demands investment in a broad range of new technologies.

***Canada has an enviable legal and policy environment, but it needs to be adapted and updated to remain at the head of the pack in the knowledge – and Internet – economy.
