Primus inks cellular deal with Rogers

Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. announced Wednesday it will increase its wireless coverage area starting next spring.

Thesubsidiary of McLean, Va.-based Primus Telecommunications Group Inc.does not own wireless spectrum but is a mobile virtual network operator(MVNO) using the Rogers network. It has signed a new contract withRogers that will let it offer service over 94 per cent of Canada,providing voice, text and wireless data packages.

Primus owns 20per cent of Globility, which in turn owns wireless vendor Mipps Inc.,which entered Industry Canada’s AdvancedWireless Services spectrum auction in 2008. Mipps laterwithdrew its bid.

Mipps owns WiMAXspectrum and, along with Primus, hasbeen testing the service in Toronto and Hamilton for twoyears. It does not offer WiMAX service to the general public yet.

Primusoriginally inked its MVNOdeal with Rogers in 2004.
