Lewis Lapham has a theory vis-a-vis the cultural changes and break down in communications. We have a limited vocabulary compared to someone living in the 1940s (Them 10,000 words, today 5.000) because we have stopped reading, certainly cannot write as well as folks did in the late 1800s and are basically an image driven society.
The article suggests this possibility: “When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning. Even as the Internet grants us easy access to vast amounts of information, it is turning us into shallower thinkers, literally changing the structure of our brain.”
