Email… So Last Year

This post is part of our IT World Canada blog network, which is dedicated to helping its community of CIOs, IT managers and network admins. This channel is sponsored by Dell. As you're exploring these resources, check out this helpful resource and sign the petition from our sponsor: National I.T. Day.

Is email already last year's office communication technology? In a recent survey, more than half of the chief information technology officers interviewed said that instant messaging would soon become their primary inter/intra-office communications tool.

IM has some obvious advantages, speed and convenience chief among them.

It's noteworthy that email even resembles snail mail, replete with address header and salutation. IM is of course much more like a conversation, facilitating collaborative problem solving. Indeed, IM programs can be bundled with other functionality–forums, group document creation, micro-blogging–thereby obviating the need to toggle between other software.

Employers need look no further than their I.T. manager for some insight on how to transition away from email to the brave new world of business IM. Information technology managers generally take great pride in keeping up with technology trends that improve efficiency and business competitiveness.

Speaking of I.T. managers, Dell Canada and partner Intel have launched a campaign for a National I.T. Day www.nationalitday.ca. They're on a quest for 10,000 signatures in support of a day of recognition for I.T. practitioners. Give your company's I.T. manager, a great productivity resource, the recognition her or she so richly deserves.
