Cisco Systems Inc. and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Tuesday announced a network designed to measure and report environmental data.
The Planetary Skin program, which aims to help with climate change research, will include data modeling and Internet Protocol technologies from San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco, plus information from NASA’s satellites, airborne sensors and ground and sea-based equipment.
NASA and Cisco said the data collected will be made available for the general public, governments and businesses so people can detect and adapt to climate change.
Over the next year Planetary Skin plans to prototype “Rainforest Skin,” which will gather data on deforestation of rain forests and gather data on changes in the amount of carbon in rain forests.
