Twitter back after a major outage

The Twitter social network experienced a major outage this morning. Although it only lasted about forty minutes, it seems to have affected all of the platform’s users.

The issues began around 8:05 a.m. EDT, with multiple users reporting various error messages. The outage is said to have affected the web, mobile apps, and even Twitter’s TweetDeck app.

At the height of the outage, Downdetector had received nearly 7,000 reports of problems with Twitter. Users no longer had access to the Twitter.com web page and the mobile app alerted that Tweets could not be updated.

Service restoration started around 8:40 a.m. as more users began to be able to use the service again. Twitter posted a tweet at 9:10 a.m. that said: “We are working to restore service for everyone.” It appears that, at that time, most people already had access to the service. As of 11:55 a.m., Twitter’s status page still reports that the company is investigating an unresolved incident.

This is Twitter’s first major outage since a series of issues experienced by the social network last February. Twitter went down twice in a week, with users unable to access the service in parts of the United States due to a “technical bug that prevented timelines from loading and Tweets from being posted”.

Despite its short duration, The Guardian reports that it was Twitter’s longest and worst outage in years. The service has not experienced a long-term outage since 2016 when it was unavailable for two and a half hours.

This latest issue comes just days after the company filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk, who is trying to walk out of a $44 billion acquisition deal under allegations that Twitter failed to meet his demand for information about “fake user accounts” on the platform.

As of publication time, Twitter had yet to respond to our requests for information.
