The cost of devaluing IT

Things haven’t been easy for the past decade for CIOs and IT managers. Budgets have been tight — particularly in the past three years — so administrators have had to be creative.
 
In a way, that’s great experience for a manager. But in this column Gartner group vice-president Mark McDonald argues there’s been a terrible cost: A devaluation of the worth of IT to the organization.

 On the one hand IT departments can boast they’re terrifically productive and efficient. On the other, there’s only so many applications that can be put into the cloud, so many responsibilities to be handed to a shrinking number of staff. Eventually, something (or someone) breaks.
 
 McDonald argues that it’s time organizations thought about leveraging technology to drive growth, a strategy that would value IT departments more.
