Tablet shipments leap 68 per cent: Gartner

Worldwide shipments of tablet device rose by as much as 67.9 per cent to hit 202 million this year while shipments of desktop and notebooks dropped 10.6 per cent to 305 million, according to research firm Gartner Inc.
Deliveries of mobile phones are expected to reach 4.3 per cent to more than 1.8 billion units.
 
 
 

Ultraportables, defined by Gartner as Chromebooks, slate and hybrid devices running Windows 8 operating systems, and other thin, light mobile devices, also experienced a surge in demand.

Gartner said no less than 20,301 units in this category has shipped in January to June this this year so far, compared to only 9,787 for the same period last year.

“Consumers want anytime anywhere computing that allows them to consume and create content with ease but also share and access that content from a different portfolio of products, Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner said in a statement. “Mobility is paramount on both mature and emerging markets.”
