Sun and Fujitsu announce new server line

Sun Microsystems Inc. teamed up with Fujitsu Ltd. Wednesday to announce expansions to its SPARC Enterprise server line, introducing two new systems based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company said the third generation CMT SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers will aim to deliver up to 16 times higher compute density than competitive two-socket x86 systems and up to 32 times higher compute density than competitive four-socket x86 systems.

The scalability of the server line, according to Sun, will pave the way for the development of new applications which work to maximize the performance of multi-core systems. Sun and Fujitsu said they will enable this with developer tools such as CoolTools and Sun Studio 12 software.

The new SPARC servers are also fully supported by both Sun and Fujitsu service outlets.
